WEEK B
Friday 8 November 2019 - Once again we have had a busy week at Hinchingbrooke School and we have more exciting news to share with you. Success stories, celebrations and news on up-coming events will be published here weekly.
Golden Antler Winners
Each week the tutor groups with the highest number of 5s (for great attitudes to learning) are awarded a Golden Antler trophy.
This week’s winners of the Golden Antlers trophies are Miss Lewis’ 7C1 for the Lower School award and Mr Pettit’s 11P2 who won the Middle School Trophy.
Congratulations to both of these tutor groups for their efforts and showing positive attitudes to learning this week.
This half-term, the focus of the Golden Antlers also includes a second element, and there are now trophies available for the tutor groups who receive the greatest number of House Points each week.
This week, the winners of the Lower School House Point Trophy are 7C2 with a huge total of 133 House Points, and the Middle School winners are 10C2 with a total of 69 House Points. Congratulations to Cromwell House for dominating this week’s competition!
House Point Competition
Every week, the House Leaders will collect their team’s House Point totals for the ongoing House Point competition. Throughout the year, House Points are earned by students in Years 7 to 11. At the end of each term, the winning House with the most House Points earned, earns the opportunity to fly their flag from the top of Hinchingbrooke House.
Congratulations to Pepys House who have overtaken Wylton again this week to take the position on top of the House Point table once again.

Remembrance Assemblies
Last week, our school assemblies were dedicated to the act of Remembrance. Students and staff were joined by military personnel from RAF Wyton each day, who shared their experiences of serving our country within the Armed Forces. They shared the reasons why they have personally chosen this career path and what the act of Remembrance means to them and their families.
Our own School Roll of Honour was read out during each assembly. This is displayed in Hinchingbrooke House and contains the names of staff and students who lost their lives serving the country during the Great War.
Remembrance honours those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life. We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth.
This year, The Royal British Legion is asking for communities across Britain to 'Remember Together' the service and sacrifice, friendship and collaboration of the men and women of Britain, the Commonwealth and Allied nations who fought together in 1944. Hinchingbrooke School will honour this request on Monday 11 November at 11.00am, when the whole school will pause for two minutes and pay our respects to our Armed Forces community, past and present.
Inter-house News
Year 7 History Castle Competition
This week, we celebrated some excellent teamwork, creativity, initiative and going ‘over and above’ through the efforts of our Year 7 History students.
Their brief was to create a castle using any medium they wished. There were 89 amazing entries this year, with each one earning valuable House Points for their House, and the top 10 entries receiving extra points and rewards. Students voted for their favourite entries which were displayed by Mr Westbury and the History team within their classrooms.
We saw a range of creativity on display, including spray painted stone keeps, oil painted concentric castles on canvass, papier mache Motte and Bailey masterpieces, jelly baby soldiers and Minecraft Medieval fortresses designed in the virtual world!
Congratulations to 7P1 and 7P2 of Pepys House who not only submitted the most entries into the competition, but they also took five of the top ten places!
Well done to Felix in 7P1 who won the competition overall, KC in 7W1 who came second and Oreva in 7P2 who finished third.
Thank you to all the students who took time to go ‘over and above’ to represent their House and enter the competition, and to Mr Westbury and the History Department who organised the competition and gave the students such a wonderful opportunity to display their amazing skills.
Year 11 Netball District Finals
This week Year 11 played their final district netball tournament. Hinchingbrooke fielded two squads to represent the school. The ‘A’ team were without injured captain Layona Smith and were trying to make it a 5 year clean sweep of wins. By the end of the afternoon, the A team had scored 49 goals across 4 games only conceding 1 goal to win the tournament. The B team finished in 4th place. Congratulations to all of the players taking part and over the last 5 years. The A team are in action on Saturday at the county finals, hoping to gain a place in the regional championships in 2020.
U15 Girls’ Football District Finals
Hinchingbrooke hosted the U15 finals this week, with 7 rounds of competitive football on display. The HBK girls, having provided a selection headache, entered two teams with the year 10s representing 'HBK A' whilst the year 9 squad represented 'HBK B'.
The A's had a fiery, competitive game against the Ivo to start, with both keepers keeping clean sheets, whilst the B's succumbed to Abbey College's relentless pressure in attack, losing 1-0. Longsands awaited the A's in the second round and the girls knew it would be a tough game, as they lost to the same team in a cup game back in October. The girls were keen to show their improvement, with Elloise driving the team forward in midfield, leading to several shots on target. Longsands bounced back nonetheless with timely tackles and interceptions. Both teams unable to find the composure in the final third when it mattered most and the game finished 0-0.
Meanwhile, on the adjacent pitch the B's beat Ernulf 2-0 with skilful goals from Daisy and Gemma C. Following that, the B's had their most competitive game of the afternoon against Sawtry managing to find the net twice and to draw level with the team in yellow. Sawtry having won their previous matches
drew on their experience to score on a counter attack, leaving the HBK girls a goal down once more when the final whistle blew.
The HBK A team avenged Sawtry when they met in round 6, netting 4 goals, with Jete and Angel amongst the scorers. At the other end, Chantelle was an excellent shot stopper and HBK only conceded 1 goal right at the end of the game. Talking of shot stoppers, Year 9's Ruby was outstanding in the net for the B's who time and time again threw herself to the ground to smother the relentless shots from Ivo in round 3 and Longsands in round 4.
A tricky last round saw HBK A and HBK B face each other. Often teammates, they were now opponents. HBK B took the lead through a well worked team goal when Ruby spotted Koren's excellent run and timely finish. Taking no prisoners, the HBK B's attempted to knock the A's when they were down and they did just that, 2-0! The stunned faces of HBK A turned to determination and conviction, pulling a goal back shortly afterwards through the A's on-form Jete. The two teams in green continued to battle it out to the final whistle the B's just about clinging on to their lead.
The HBK A team finished in 4th place with 9 points whilst the HBK B team finished 1 position below with 9 points. Longsands took the gold medals back to St Neots for the 3rd consecutive time. A fantastic afternoon of football once again, the cold and wet conditions did not dampen the spirit or the skill that was on show. Thank you and well done to all teams for making it a fantastic showcase for girls’ football.
Player of the Tournament - Ruby (HBK B's)
Player of the Tournament - Elloise (HBK A's)
U15 NatWest Vase
The Hinchingbrooke Year 10 Rugby squad hosted Mark Rutherford School from Bedford in the second round of the U15 NatWest Vase this week.
Both teams played some competitive rugby throughout the match, with Hinchingbrooke scoring a try first within the first minute of the game as Sid Burrage crossed the line.
The progress through this tournament has shown the potential of this team. Our external referee complimented the boys on the quality of their game. Liam O’Kane, Kieran Deans and our fantastic front row of Jack, Callum and Elliot also received lots of praise from the official.
After a physical battle, Hinchingbrooke finished on top as 39-8 winners. Man of the match was Kieran who scored by crossing the whitewash, kicked off the tee and finished the game with an accurate drop goal.
Our Next game is Monday 18 November 2019 against King’s Peterborough in the County Cup.
