Students All Fired Up About Art
Sixth Form Students All Fired Up About Art
Over the month of November, 4 of our Year 12 Art students: Emma S, Jovanna D, Suzi R. and Nellie P along with Head of Creativity, Ms Anneli Lombard worked on a canvas for the new Huntingdon Fire Station and Training centre.
The Fire Service asked if we could produce a piece of work that highlights the wider role of the service in the community, such as Search and Rescue, fitting smoke detectors for vulnerable people along with the more traditional roles we associate with them. The students worked particularly hard to incorporate as much as possible taking inspiration from the artist Michael Craig-Martin, the colours of the ‘watches’ at the station and the equipment they use.
On completion the canvas was part of the official opening of the new Fire station and Training Centre on Wednesday 29th November by HRH Princess Anne. The students were presented to her and had the opportunity to explain the work and inspiration.
The canvas is now installed in a meeting room, often used for community meetings to highlight the changing roles of the service.
‘We were delighted to be approached by Cambs Fire & Rescue, as there is such a strong connection between parents who work for the service and students in the school, as well as connections to the wider community. It was an honour to be presented to HRH Princess Anne, who asked lots of relevant questions and a fantastic experience for the students.
