Year 7 Catch-Up Premium 2018-2019

Catch-up Funding is allocated to schools by the government for each Year 7 pupil who does not reach the expected standard in reading and maths at Key Stage 2.  To date, the additional funding has been up to £500 per pupil. The government have confirmed secondary schools will receive the same overall amount of year 7 catch-up funding they received in 2017 to 2018, adjusted to reflect the percentage change in the size of their year 7 cohort, based on the October 2018 census.

In the academic year 2018/19, Hinchingbrooke School will receive Y7 catch-up premium totalling £14500. This is calculated based on the number of students that did not meet national expected standards in KS2 SATS.

We intended to use the premium this year to:

·       Deliver wave 2 intervention sessions ‘Every Child Counts Success@Artithmetic’

·       Engage students in the Times tables Rock stars programme.

·       Deliver PiXL Code to wave 3 intervention students delivered by a trained TA.

·       Deliver Lexonik to wave 2 and 3 intervention students delivered by a trained TA.

·       Engage all year 7  through the Accelerated Reader scheme

·       Deliver wave 2 interventions in English to small groups of students withdrawn from lessons for            catch up English.

Wave 2 Intervention Maths sessions £990

Success @ Arithmetic is an Every Child Counts numeracy intervention for pupils in KS2 and 3 who need support to become fluent at arithmetic. It helps them to make accelerated progress and to catch up with their peers, becoming more confident at calculation. Each child is assessed using the Sandwell Numerical Age Assessment before beginning the intervention. A trained TA specialist will deliver the programme in small groups (no greater than 4) over an 8 week period. Each week, a pupil will receive 3 x 50min sessions. Each child will then be re-assessed using the Sandwell Numerical Age Assessment at the end of the intervention to evaluate their progress

The Times Tables Rock Star Programme £86.50

Times Tables Rock Stars is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice.

Each week concentrates on a different times table, with a recommended consolidation week for rehearsing the tables that have recently been practiced every third week or so.

This format has very successfully boosted times tables recall speed for hundreds of thousands of pupils over the last 7 years in over 4500 schools - both primary and secondary - worldwide.

Wave 3 Literacy Intervention PiXL Code £260

PiXL CODE is a reading accuracy intervention, designed in response to the lack of reading programmes available for older struggling readers who need support in Key Stages 3 & 4.

This course provides a systematic, personalised approach to learning to read, drawing on evidence-based methods to help students retain knowledge in the long-term. The course is diagnostic, enabling students to target weaker areas personal to them, supported by the teacher at all times

The Accelerated Reader Scheme £4163

Accelerated Reader is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice, motivating students to read for pleasure. Star Assessments give accurate, actionable data about what students know and what they are ready to learn next, informing planning and teaching.

Wave 2 Intervention Literacy sessions

Approximately 2-4 students are taught in small withdrawal groups focusing on key elements of the English curriculum whilst reinforcing basic spelling and grammar rules. Students attended the sessions depending on need and progress and there was close liaison with the class teacher. Students were encouraged to reflect on their own work to target their next steps.

Lexonik Literacy Intervention Approx. £5000 contribution

Lexonik delivers instant impact on literacy. Additional benefits include greater vocabulary understanding, comprehension, spelling and above all, confidence! We used the premium this year to:

• Engage students in the Times Tables Rock Stars Programme.
• Deliver PiXL Code to wave 3 intervention students delivered by a trained TA.
• Engage wave 2 and 3 readers through the Accelerated Reader Scheme
• Deliver wave 2 interventions in English to small groups of students withdrawn from lessons for catch up English.
• Deliver a Numeracy and Literacy Catch-Up week through PET-Xi Training Limited

Wave 2 Intervention Maths sessions

Approximately 8 students were taught in small withdrawal groups. Students followed a highly structured and differentiated year 7 scheme of work whilst also reviewing basic numeracy skills. Students completed a Numeracy Skills Test at the beginning and end of each term and progress was monitored.

PET-Xi Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Week  £6221

The Intervention week consisted of 3 days of literacy and 2 days of numeracy. Literacy sessions provided a focused, skills based programme to enable rapid progression in reading and writing skills. Numeracy sessions provided a focused boost to knowledge, calculating skills and mental arithmetic.

PET-Xi Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Week

Students completed literacy and numeracy tests at the beginning and end of the week’s intervention. Average internal scores increased from 27% to 68% between the beginning and the end of the programme.

96% of students rated the course as good, very good or excellent.

88% of students said that they would recommend the course.

Literacy Catch-Up: Impact Summary

45 students attended our Literacy Catch-Up week in October 2016.  All of these students started Hinchingbrooke in September working below a scaled-score average of 95.

Over the course, the students improved their reading score from an average of 87.7 to an average of 94.6 (equivalent to an increase of just under 2 sub-levels).  Students improved their grammar score from an average of 91.5 to an average of 93.8 (equivalent to just over half a sub-level).  Students rated all aspects of the literacy week as very good or excellent.

Numeracy Catch-Up: Impact Summary

25 students attended out Numeracy Catch-Up week in November 2015.  All of these students started in September working below a scaled-score of 92.

As a result of this intervention, students increased their average scaled-score from 87.5 to 90.5 (equivalent to an increase of around 1 sub-level).  96% of students reported they felt an increase in confidence in at least 2 of the 5 topic areas covered in the programme.  Students rated the vast majority of the course as very good or excellent.

2015-16

In 2015-16 we received £14500

Literacy Catch-Up: Impact Summary

45 students attended our Literacy Catch-Up week in November 2015.  All of these students started Hinchingbrooke in September  working below a level 4c.

At the end of course, 37 of the 45 students (82%) had achieved at least a level 4c overall.

Compared to their starting level, on average students increased their writing level by 3.5 sub-levels and their reading level by 1.2 sub-levels.  Students increased their literacy level by an average of 2.3 sub-levels.

Numeracy Catch-Up: Impact Summary

20 students attended out Numeracy Catch-Up week in January 2016.  All of these students started in September working below a level 4c.

At the end of the course 9 students (45%) made an average of 1.2 sub-levels of progress; 9 students (45%) had consolidated their level and 2 students had regressed.  Overall average progress was 0.5 sub-levels as a result of this intervention.

In 2014-15 we received £13000. 

For 2014-15 we undertook the following actions to support students who started Hinchingbrooke working at below a level 4c in Maths or English.

• Appointment of a Student Intervention and Support Manager
   
• Provision of small groups in maths to enable more focused support/time for students
   
• Targeted use Level 3 Teaching Assistants to support teacher of classes with eligible students present
   
• Form time small group tuition to boost literacy and numeracy
   
• Additional testing to diagnose more precisely the One form time a week dedicated to literacy and numeracy activities
   
• support required – ARTi, AMTi, CAT and PASS tests

Maths Impact

Students eligible for catch-up funding made an average of 1.4 levels of progress compared to the 1.0 levels of progress made by other students.  The impact was an additional 0.4 levels of progress over the course of the year.

English Impact

The progress of students eligible for catch-up was not statistically different to those students who did not take part in the programme.  An intensive catch-up programme, run by an external provider, will be trialled in 2015/16.
